Habitats Directive

EU Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and species diversity

The 1992 Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) aims to protect species diversity within the European Union by conserving natural habitats. Protected areas designated under the Habitats Directive and under the Birds Directive together constitute the European Natura 2000 network.

The Habitats Directive stipulates that an impact assessment must by carried out for plans and projects that could, either individually or in combination with other plans and projects, have a significant impact on an area.
