Bolter

Sugar beets that flower and produce seed - not desired in agriculture.

Sugar beet is a biennial plant. During the first year, sugar beets mainly produce leaves and its harvestable root. The following year they bolt, producing flowers and seed.

Bolters are sugar beets that flower the first year. Farmers have no interest in bolters, most of which are quickly removed. Bolters are only useful for breeding and seed production purposes.

Bolters occur for various reasons, mostly having to do with weather e.g. low spring temperatures.
