Embryo

The part of a seed that develops into a new plant

The embryo develops from the fertilised ovule. It consists of the hypocotyl, radicle, and cotyledons, and is usually surrounded by nutrients. At germination, the embryo develops into a young plant.

Under certain conditions in cell cultures, embryos can be taken from seeds and grown directly into a complete plant (embryo rescue).
