Reporter Gene
Genes or gene fragments that are attached to other genes so that their activity can be detected
Reporter genes must produce gene products that are as easy as possible to detect and are non-toxic for the organism or cells in which they are produced.
Genes used as reporter genes include those that trigger colour changes (luciferase gene for a fluorescent glow) or metabolism changes (galactosidase gene for lactose breakdown). The gfp reporter gene is a gene that produces a green fluorescent protein.
