Wild type

The most common form of an organism in nature

Some biosafety projects are investigating whether genetically modified plants are different from the relevant wild type and from isogenic control lines.

Here, the wild type is taken to mean those plants of a species or variety that are usually found in nature or on fields. The wild type is always identified by phenotype, i.e. by its outwardly visible characteristics.
