A gene that has been introduced into the genome of an organism by means of genetic engineering

The adjective ‘transgenic’ is often used to describe genetically modified plants, animals and micro-organisms: a transgenic plant is a plant into which a gene from another species has been introduced. This gene is transferred in the form of a suitable gene construct, usually by means of genetic engineering methods (recombination techniques). Unlike natural propagation or classic breeding techniques, species boundaries are no barrier to genetic engineering.

Sometimes the word transgene is also used to refer to a genetically modified organism (GMO).
