Insertion

Integration of a piece of genetic information (DNA) into a gene

Insertion can occur in a cell spontaneously as in the case of a natural mutation. But they can also be caused directly by genetic engineering: the DNA strand is cut open by enzymes and the foreign section is integrated at the open ends.
