Potato starch

The potato is an important source of starch. When processed  the two components of potato starch have to be separated at considerable expense. Genetic methods have now been used to develop potatoes that form only one of the two starch components.

Background

Fundamental research: The Max Planck Institute in Golm has developed a transgenic potato that produces more starch in its tubers as a result of an improved oxygen supply.

Deliberate releases, authorisations and cultivation

As a crop, the potato accounts for the largest number of deliberate release trials in the EU. The main focus is on modified starch compositions. Two applications for approval of such potatoes have been submitted in the EU.
