The flight of the pollen cloud
To prevent the uncontrolled spread of GM maize, one needs to know how far the pollen travels. In a project led by the Federal Biological Research Centre, outcrossing rates were measured and a mathematical model developed for pollen drift as a function of climatic conditions. Coexistence of conventional and GM maize cultivation
Within the EU, a threshold of 0.9 per cent has been agreed for technically unavoidable GMO contamination. If the GMO level exceeds this threshold, even conventional maize must be labelled as "genetically modified". This means that GM maize cultivation must be organised in such a way that non-GM conventional farming is possible in the long term.
