Biosafenet
Mission: Biosafenet is aimed at contribution to a responsible and sustainable application of GMOs in European agriculture by promoting informed discussion of the scientific issues related to GMO biosafety.
|
Biosafenet is an EU-funded network of European scientists working in the field of GMO biosafety research. The project aim is the combination of biosafety information from various EU research programmes and from existing European GMO biosafety networks. Additionally, research results are summarised for scientific discussion as well as for policy making. The project also supports the activities of the International Society for Biosafety Research (ISBR) and secures active participation of European experts in the biennial International Symposia on Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organism (ISBGMO), which are the only internationally-recognised symposia in this important field of research. |
Biosafenet has contributed to the advancement of the GMO-Safety internet platform, which now covers an extended spectrum of information on international biosafety research. In the course of the project, Biosafenet has developed a navigator tool to facilitate access to other biosafety-related internet resources and research documents.
The main activities of Biosafenet at a glance:
-
Active participation of European experts in the International Symposia on Biosafety of GMO (Korea 2006 and New Zealand 2008)
-
Execution of six expert seminars and production of recommendation reports from different fields of biosafety research (topics: risk assessment & fitness, GMO monitoring, statistics for evaluation of effects on non-target organism, GM insects, abiotic stress tolerance). The recommendation reports were or will be published in the journal Environmental Biosafety Research (EBR).
-
Establishment of networks of local biosafety research representatives: (a)scientists from the new EU Member States such as the Eastern European biosafety initiative Pannonian Biotech Association and (b) fostering of biosafety research within Europe through scientific cooperation with European institutions and authorities such as the European Food Safety Authority.
-
Support of the activities of the international biosafety research community and the International Society for Biosafety Research (ISBR).
