Coexistence
National coexistence rules
France
In June 2008 a new Genetic Engineering Act entered into force in France. The legislation creates the long-awaited legal framework for the cultivation of genetically modified crops in France and contains a legal basis for coexistence. However, no genetically modified crops are being grown at the moment. At the beginning of February 2008 the French government issued a national ban on growing MON810 maize, which has been approved in the EU since 1998.
The new Genetic Engineering Act contains provisions on liability for financial losses as a result of the presence of GMOs in conventional harvests.
A site register has been set up and the French government has issued a decree setting a minimum distance for maize cultivation of 50 metres.
