Dahnsdorf: Trial laid waste

In the night of the 21 to 22 March 2002, unknown persons destroyed the test fields sown with genetically modified rapeseed in Dahnsdorf (Brandenburg).

Ruined: Test field with genetically modified rapeseed

Several trials of the Kleinmachnow Federal agency for Biology have been affected, some of which are part of the safety research program.

On these tracts of land, experimental investigations into the environmental behaviour of genetically modified rapeseed were being carried out.

These concern, for example, outcrossings to other rapeseed and related wild species, the persistence of transgenic rapeseed in the soil, as well as the question of possible gene transfer to bacteria in the gut of honey bees.

According to the project leader, the trials can only be continued in a limited fashion after this destructive action.
